With sweater weather slated to make its grand debut in the
upcoming weeks, I find myself planning out my fall weekends with a host of
autumn activities. This year, like most,
the Shawangunk and Catskill regions should be in peak foliage the third week in
October and I can’t wait to take my family on the
Catskill Mountain Railroad’s Fall Foliage Train Ride.
This one hour and twenty minute excursion aboard a restored
1922 Erie Lackawanna Coach provides a unique view of the Ulster County countryside
with its open air flatcars; an experience that definitely cannot be matched nor
recreated driving in your own car. I
mean really, who doesn’t want to feel the crisp mountain air kiss their cheeks
as a breathtaking backdrop of autumn hues unfolds before them? Still, for the less adventurous, interior
cars are available and provide an equally incredible view.
The trip includes a stop at the Phoenicia Station, home of
the Empire State Railway museum. Here,
passengers can explore railroading both past and present on the Catskill
Mountain Railroad Branch Line of the Ulster and Delaware Railroad.
After your sightseeing adventure, kick back and enjoy the
mountains from the area’s premier resort,
Honor’s Haven Resort & Spa. Offering countess recreational opportunities,
Honor’s Haven takes advantage of its surroundings by offering guests sweeping
and picturesque views from its golf course, hiking trails, and lakeside patio
where you can enjoy their nightly fires and s’mores.
The Catskill Mountain Railroad’s Fall Foliage Train only
operates from September 25
th thru November 1
st on
Fridays, Weekends, and Columbus Day, so you’ll want to make your reservation
before the last leaf falls. To learn
