Ever since I was a little girl, I have identified Columbus
Day Weekend as a time of discovery. Not
only of the new world, but of the season’s unique bouquet of activities,
including what my grandfather used to call a search for the Great Pumpkin!
Not to be confused with the Great Pumpkin from the 1966
Charlie Brown Special, this Great
Pumpkin was a hand-picked symbol of fall.
It would be chosen from hundreds of specimens, scattered throughout the
pumpkin patch. Some were oddly shaped,
some were just the most brilliant shade of orange you could ever imagine, and it
was up to me and my older sister to pick that perfect, one-of-a-kind pumpkin
that would greet friends, family and neighbors throughout the rest of the
season.
Even as an adult, the search for the Great Pumpkin continues. Although the search has long been taken over
by my two sons, the underlying purpose to spend quality time with family while
discovering the beauty of nature’s bounty has stood the test of time.
This Columbus
Day Weekend, Honor’s Haven Resort & Spa will be offering its guests a
chance to search for their own Great Pumpkin with an afternoon hayride out to
the pumpkin patch at Kelder’s Farm; just 18-minutes from the resort.
The cost to this enjoy this distinctly country activity is
just $3.00 per person; pumpkins run $5 - $17, depending on how large you want
your Great Pumpkin to be. Other
available activities include a corn maze ($3.50 per person), miniature golf
($3.75 per person, per game), jumping pillow ($5.00 per person) and petting zoo
(free to visit the animals; $1 per bag of animal feed).

Kelder’s Farm, which has been in operation since 1836 is
located in Kerhonkson, NY. Selected as
New York State’s Farm Bureau’s Young Farmers of 1995 and as the northeast
representatives to the American Farm Bureau National Young Farmers Committee,
they are a century-old farm with new ideas.
Interested in passing on their agricultural heritage to our children,
Kelder’s Farm hosts educational (and FUN) school tours throughout the school
year. Kids can milk a cow and learn
about the operation of a family farm.
