At some point in life, we all find ourselves analyzing those
fine lines around our eyes or noticing that the morning aches and pains are lasting
a little bit longer than they did last year.
It’s at this point in our lives that we are faced with the reality that
we are all just part of an aging society.
Sometimes this reality is met with a resigned acceptance. Other times it’s met with a shudder of
disbelief and a little cosmetic surgery.
Regardless of which category you fall under, the reality of feeling
younger, having more energy and living a longer and more healthful life can be
found on the dance floor!
Just the other day, my sister told me that you don’t stop
dancing because you grow old – you grow old because you stopped dancing. This is possibly the most profoundly accurate
pearl of wisdom she has ever shared with me.
So why is dancing so important to longevity?
According to Linda Gilberg, President/Owner of
Stardust Dance Productions,
“Dancing is a key component to what has become commonly referred to as successful aging for various reasons.”
1. Dance IS
Exercise. Every time you get out on
the dance floor you are strengthening your muscles and
increasing the amount of
blood and oxygen flowing to both the brain and heart.
2. Improved Diet. A healthy diet seems to be the next
natural step for those participating in regular physical activities like
dancing.
3. Social
Interaction. Staying socially active,
whether via dance lessons or social groups that focus on dancing, helps to reduce
the risk of developing high blood pressure.
It can also stave off depression, dementia and even Alzheimer’s.
4. Dancing
is a Workout for Your Brain. We’ve
all heard the phrase “if you don’t use it, you lose it”. Well, the same holds true for your brain’s
cognitive function. Luckily, learning
new dance steps and routines stimulates the brain; keeping those synapses
firing!
