Growing up as a child of the 70’s and 80’s, the holidays seemed to hold
their own – each separate in its own specific way. Yet as we inch farther and farther into the
21st century the once prominent lines separating Halloween,
Thanksgiving and Christmas seem to be blurring into one frenzied holiday
season.
I admit that I myself have allowed this happen, having adopted the
tradition of doing almost all of my Christmas shopping the day after
Halloween. While this “tradition” as I
now call it, was founded under the premise of freeing myself up to truly enjoy
the season, what actually transpired was a snowball effect; each year devoting
more time and more energy to holiday duties that were once skillfully
accomplished in a matter of days not weeks.
So what does this blurring of lines mean?
For many, myself included, it means struggling to balance the demands of
shopping, parties, family obligations and house guests while maintaining a
sense of sanity.
By and large, the holiday season contributes to feelings of being
overwhelmed and increased tension, which is why learning holiday stress
management techniques is so important.
According to Kate Kusterbeck of the
EarthMind Wellness Center at Honor’s Haven Resort & Spa, “The heightened
stress levels that accompany the holidays can cause chemicals changes within
the brain, contributing to depression, anxiety, phobias and even panic attacks.”
“The effects of holiday stress can be
overwhelming” continues Kusterbeck, “which is why the EarthMind Wellness Center
is offering a Holiday Stress Management workshop on Saturday, December 7th
from 2:00PM – 4:00PM.”
