It’s no secret that hiking
can provide a myriad of health benefits; ranging from physical fitness to
improved brain function. But did you know that the earth beneath your
feet could actually be boosting your child’s immune system or treating
depression with every stride? It’s crazy – right?
According to a 2008 article
in Popular Science, a nonpathogenic species of bacteria that lives naturally in
soil increases the brain’s production of serotonin; reducing depressive
behaviors. What’s even more impressive is that unlike Prozac, this
bacteria does not produce a laundry list of side effects.
The same bacteria is believed
to reduce the risk of developing allergic asthma, caused by pollen, pet dander
and other environmental factors, among children.
I guess you could say that
it’s no coincidence that in addition to wearing hiking boots and back packs,
many of those hiking the trails at Honor’s Haven Resort & Spa and
Minnewaska State Park are also wearing smiles.
